Carbon calculations and management of an organisation's carbon footprint is about quantifying and understanding greenhouse gas emissions that directly contribute to global climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO_²) is the most common greenhouse gas, hence the term "carbon footprint".

However, numerous variables and inputs need to be understood in order to achieve an accurate account of an organisation's total carbon footprint. These include organisational and operational boundaries, direct and indirect emissions, emissions factors.

A baseline carbon value is critical in identifying potential greenhouse gas reduction opportunities, and should be updated and compared annually.
