Carbon Calculated was founded in 2008. Since then, the business has grown in stature, working with multiple companies of all sizes, across various geographies and sectors.
The Carbon Calculated team knows that helping companies understand their carbon footprints is the first step. We equip business leaders with the tools they need to reduce the impact of GHG emissions and, at the same time, provide the business-side advantages of carbon management.
In an effort to give back to the community, Carbon Calculated donates a portion of its annual turnover to worthy NPOs in South Africa. Each year our employees select an organisation of their choice to support.
Kyle joined Carbon Calculated as a data analyst in September 2024, bringing a wealth of experience in carbon and sustainability analysis. He holds a BA in Development and Environment, a Postgraduate Diploma, and an MPhil in Environmental Management from Stellenbosch University. Kyle has conducted comprehensive carbon footprint assessments and sustainability disclosures for large, listed REITs in South Africa, aligning with frameworks such as CDP and GRESB. In addition to his analytical expertise, Kyle has an extensive background in environmental consulting, including impact assessments, compliance, and policy development. His teaching experience across Asia has honed his ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.
Jayne joined the Carbon Calculated team as a data analyst in early 2023. Jayne is passionate about the environment and is driven to make a positive change in the natural world through her work at Carbon Calculated. She previously worked as an ecological consultant in Jersey in the UK. Jayne holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Development, as well as a BSc Honours in Biodiversity and Ecology, both from Stellenbosch University.
Cate joined the Carbon Calculated team as a Data Analyst in 2022. She has a background in accounting, and as a Chartered Management Accountant is a member of CIMA. Prior to her role at Carbon Calculated, Cate worked in the corporate environment gaining experience in the fast-moving consumer goods, manufacturing and online-sales industries. Within her new role at Carbon Calculated, Cate seeks to develop her skills in effectively managing business performance and partner with and add value to clients as they manage their carbon footprints.
Samantha has a B.Comm (Acc) degree obtained at the University of the Western Cape. She has over 25 years experience in financial accounting and statutory reporting in the corporate and financial services industry. Samantha has been working with Carbon Calculated since 2019 is passionate about the major impact business and individuals have on the environment during the course of their operations and day-to-day activities. Samantha uses her accounting experience to ensure accurate data analysis in the carbon footprint reporting space.
Jess joined the Carbon Calculated team in early 2016. Over the years she has worked in all aspects of the business, from client management to carbon footprint preparation. Over time Jess’ role has become more specialised, and she now primarily supports globally positioned companies with their CDP water, forestry and climate disclosures and implementing Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. One of her passions is educating and training corporates around carbon management and climate change. Jess develops and runs workshops on a number of related topics with the aim of generating interest and engagement among staff and c-suites alike around their carbon journey and the proactive mitigation changes they can make to not only benefit the world around them but also their business. Jess holds a Masters in Environmental Science from the University of the Witwatersrand and, most recently, completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) through the University of South Africa.
Co-founder of Carbon Calculated, Alex has extensive experience assisting large institutions to conduct climate change risk and opportunity analyses. Following an early career in environmental communications, he directed his energies into corporate environmental sustainability, primarily focused on developing and implementing strategies to drive environmental best practices within organisations. Apart from preparing carbon footprints, Alex provides a broad range of consulting services in environmental policy development and implementation, including impact measurement, benchmarking and advising on cost-cutting opportunities. Alex also helps clients respond to government policies and discussion papers regarding the environment. Alex holds a BA degree from the University of Cape Town and an MSc in Environmental Management from Imperial College, University of London.
Ana joined the Carbon Calculated team as an intern in February 2022. She assists the company with office administration, research and data analysis. Prior to this, she studied Environmental Management at Cape Peninsula University for a period of 4 years, where she gained most of her knowledge of the environment and matters related to the environment. Being part of Carbon Calculated has been an extraordinary experience, an environment for growth and development of her skills as well as an opportunity to be part of a group of people who desire to bring change to the environment and improve the lives of people for the better.
Megan has been partnered with Carbon Calculated as a data analyst since early 2020. She holds a degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology from the University of the Western Cape and has completed her Honours in Ecological Sciences through the University of KwaZulu-Natal, specialising in Grassland management in South Africa. Megan’s background in conservation and drive to educate others about environmental management and sustainability have fed into her role as she supports the team in carbon footprint analyses and the preparation of carbon footprint reports.
Rebekah Hughes is a passionate corporate sustainability professional with niche expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, science-based target setting and corporate relationship management of F500 companies and leading international companies. She has a proven ability to authentically build relationships in a multicultural environment, influence change, innovate and get results. Within her role at Carbon Calculated, she supports companies in environmental disclosure through CDP, science-based target setting in accordance with the Science Based Targets initiative and consults on general corporate sustainability. She previously worked as an Engagement and Target Analyst in the Science Based Targets initiative with WWF South Africa and has experience in the local government sustainability sector. Rebekah holds a BSc Honours in Atmospheric Science (first class) and MPhil in Environmental Law from the University of Cape Town and is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Stephen has over 14 years of experience in software development and training. He has consulted for several blue-chip organisations including: Old Mutual; Santam; Liberty; Standard Bank; and Nampak. Stephen is currently a Software Engineer at an international research company, and is also a part-time lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Stephen joined the Carbon Calculated team in 2012 and assists with the data management and analytic processes of the company’s environmental management software solution, CarbonKnown.
As a verification and CDP specialist, Karen has considerable experience in GHG inventory verifications, conducting carbon footprint assessments, and energy audits. Karen also completes CDP questionnaires for Carbon Calculated’s various Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed clients, many of whom have consequently featured on the CDP Disclosure Leadership Index, Performance Index and Global Climate A-list.
Prior to partnering with the Carbon Calculated team, Karen worked at Nedbank Capital as a Carbon Credit Originator, identifying, developing and implementing viable CDM projects across Africa. Preceding that she was a Senior Corporate Tax Advisor at Shell South Africa.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Stellenbosch as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Tax Law from the University of Cape Town (UCT). She obtained an Executive MBA with Distinction from the Graduate School of Business, UCT, where, as first female recipient, she was awarded a Gold Medal for high professional performance and outstanding achievement.
Robyn has been working with Carbon Calculated as a data analyst since early 2017, primarily assisting with the analysis and calculation of the carbon footprints for our many loyal clients. Robyn’s passion for all things eco has brought her back into the environmental field after taking a break to start a family. Before that she was involved in a start-up environmental consulting business that aimed to encourage small businesses to begin the journey of environmental education, measurement and efficiencies. She also has many years of experience as a business and process analyst in the telecommunications industry.
Nici has over a two decades of experience in environmental consulting, following the completion of a BSc Honours at the University of Cape Town in Environmental and Geographical Science and Ocean and Atmospheric Science. She co-founded Carbon Calculated in 2008 with Alex Hetherington on the realisation that organisations can manage their environmental impact through the measurement and management of their consumption and carbon footprint. Since then she has conducted numerous carbon footprints for a variety of large organisations. An experienced trainer and manager of Environmental Controlling Officers in the film industry, Nici also has extensive experience preparing environmental management projects including Basic Assessment Reports, Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Impact Assessments.
